What is Thai Massage?
Thai Massage, Thai Yoga Massage, and Nuad Boran are all names for a traditional healing modality that has been practiced in Thailand for centuries. Based on Ayurvedic medicine and yoga, this art form has been handed down through an unbroken chain of masters for over 2,500 years. A complete Thai Massage sequence consists of a traditional combination of muscle compression, acupressure, energy meridian work, and yoga-like stretching for an invigorating and balanced experience. The sequence can be varied to suit a wide range of physical needs and abilities as it relaxes tense muscles and aids in the improvement of circulation, flexibility, muscle tone, strength, and energy level. Just like with meditation practice, deep mindful breathing incorporated into the Thai yoga massage session can significantly enhance the experience as breath awareness encourages deeper relaxation of both body and mind. Today, Thai massage is becoming increasingly popular in the West, and it is one of the fastest growing massage modalities in the U.S. |
What is the experience like?
Thai Yoga Massage is a therapeutic form of bodywork that fluidly combines muscle compression, assisted yoga-like stretches, acupressure, joint mobilization, and energy work. It is different from other forms of massage in that there is no oil used, the practitioner uses a cushioned mat on the floor rather than a table, and clients remain completely clothed throughout the session. And, in addition to what might be the more familiar massage and acupressure components, the full body stretching has been described as having someone “do yoga to you." :-) |
What is the theory?
Thai massage is directly related to Ayurvedic principles originating in India and is said to have arrived in Thailand along with Buddhism. Similar to other Asian techniques such as shiatsu and reflexology, and Western developments such as trigger points, Thai massage is a form of therapy based on the theory of flow of energy between specific points on the periphery of the body and the internal organs. Linked through an intricate network of energy meridians (sen), acupressure points stimulate and relax the participant’s mind and body, promoting the natural healing processes.
